Why We Target 1% a Week, Not 10% a Day

The math and psychology behind conservative compounding, and why chasing bigger numbers is how smal l accounts die.

Ten percent a day sounds better than one percent a week until you do the math on what it actually requires: consistently doubling your account roughly every 7 trading days, forever, without a single b ad stretch. No trader — human or system — does that sustainably. The ones who claim to either blow up quietly later or were never doing it in the first place.

One percent a week compounds to roughly 68% a year if nothing goes wrong, which nothing ever does perf ectly. Real weeks include losing weeks. The target isn't "exactly 1% every single week" — it's a risk framework tuned so that when you average it out over months, the number lands somewhere reasonable wit hout requiring you to survive on adrenaline.

The reason this matters more for small accounts specifically: a $300 account chasing 10%-a-day math is one bad week from being a $50 account, and a $50 account can't recover through good trading — the pos ition sizes are too small to matter. A $300 account compounding slowly at 1% a week is still a $300-is h account after a bad week, still in the game, still able to compound again next week.

Discipline here isn't a personality trait. It's just choosing the version of this that's still solvent in six months.
